ENODA’s Dr Fiona Robinson Awarded Prestigious IOM3 Medal and Appointed as Chair of National Energy Materials Committee
ENODA is proud to announce the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (IOM3) has awarded Dr Fiona Robinson, our Principal Metallurgist, with the T B Marsden Professional Medal.
The prestigious award recognises outstanding contributions to the materials community. Fiona was awarded the medal for her significant technical contributions, leadership, and continuous dedication to advancing the fields of metallurgy and energy materials.
Alongside this honour, this year Fiona was appointed as Chair of the IOM3 Energy Materials Steering Committee. This role positions her as a leader in shaping the Institute’s energy technology strategy. Additionally, she contributes to the National Materials Innovation Strategy Metallics team, coordinating with UK Government to direct UK innovation policy, materials research, and industry capabilities.
Fiona highlights the importance of her newly appointed role and its potential to impact the energy sector:
“I’m responsible for leading a team at the Institute of Materials that encompasses all aspects of energy materials, different types of power and different materials. We contribute to things like policy and consultation from the government and we’re able to respond to those documents which gives us some power. We also create content to try to raise the profile of energy materials.”
Fiona’s Background & Experience
Fiona’s award reflects her wealth of knowledge, bringing over 28 years of experience across the steel industry and 5 years in academia, spanning RD&T, Product and Process Development and Process Technology.
Fiona has been a long-standing leader within the Newport & Cardiff Materials Society (NCMS), becoming its first female president and being at the forefront of operations, organising events, enhancing local engagement, and supporting professionals in materials science. For over five years, within the Energy Materials Group, she has contributed her expertise in electrical steels and soft magnetic materials to facilitate the electrification of transport. Her organisational leadership has included managing the EMG Annual Conference and supporting the WISPER 2025 conference as a member of the committee.
Beyond her strategic and technical work, Fiona is appointed as Vice-Chair of Women in Materials, Minerals, and Mining (WIM3), leveraging diversity in engineering and championing initiatives that promote gender equality.
Congratulations to Fiona on this well-deserved award. We are delighted to have her as an integral part of ENODA’s materials science team, where she continues to make a significant impact in the field.
